FED: Howard says Qld will get reasonable disaster relief

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says the federal government will do its bit to help Queensland
cope with the aftermath of the state's massive floods.

But he says the state has responsibilities too and it's a question of a fair thing.

In recent weeks, Queensland has been hit by flood damage in its south and cyclone damage in
its north.

Premier BEATTIE has proposed significant changes to disaster relief funding arrangements,
including measures to minimise the risk of damage in future natural disasters.

He says he's written to Mr HOWARD proposing a joint Commonwealth/state Disaster Mitigation
Funds for infrastructure improvement.
